Background of the Study
Obesity during pregnancy is a growing public health concern due to its association with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and increased risk of cesarean delivery. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted obesity as a significant risk factor for pregnancy complications and long-term health effects on both the mother and child (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, where obesity rates are rising due to dietary and lifestyle changes, there is a need to assess the awareness of obesity-related risks among pregnant women. Katsina State, like many parts of northern Nigeria, has a high prevalence of obesity among women, yet little is known about their level of awareness regarding its implications during pregnancy (Mustapha et al., 2023). While some antenatal care programs provide health education, it is unclear whether pregnant women fully understand the risks associated with obesity and how to manage weight effectively during pregnancy. This study aims to investigate the awareness of obesity risks among pregnant women in Katsina State and identify gaps in knowledge that may affect maternal health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing obesity rates among women in Nigeria, there is limited research on awareness levels regarding obesity risks during pregnancy, particularly in Katsina State. Pregnant women who are unaware of these risks may be less likely to adopt healthy lifestyle practices, leading to increased complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Additionally, inadequate health education during antenatal visits may contribute to poor weight management among expectant mothers. Without sufficient awareness, obesity-related pregnancy complications may continue to rise, placing additional strain on healthcare resources. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the level of awareness among pregnant women in Katsina State regarding obesity risks and examining the role of antenatal care in educating expectant mothers on weight management.

Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Katsina State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with expectant mothers and healthcare providers. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported awareness levels and the challenge of assessing the impact of antenatal education programs over time.
